How a language lab is formed

A language lab is a named institution for one language. It is how Language Work takes shape without turning wekify.com into a stand-in for every community.

The lab sits inside Wekify LLC for legal and administrative housing. Its mission, assets, and accountability face the language community, not the company catalog.

• One lab, one language. The lab is not a folder of many languages under one brand.
• The lab is the parent of that language’s digital platforms, tools, research, and community efforts.
• Wekify is the company that can host the lab. Wekify is not the lab’s community.

A language is an identity. A language with its own management is better than this company pretending to be its representative.

• The lab should have its own website when it can carry one.
• The lab should publish its own public documents when it is ready — written to that community, in the languages that community needs.
• Wekify may link to the lab. It should not replace the lab’s public face.
• When we expand, we reuse shared tools where reuse is honest, and we copy or rebuild when a language needs its own shape.

Labs begin small and named. They do not wait for a perfect nonprofit structure before the work can exist.

• A language need is named, and a lab is formed as a division of Wekify for that language.
• The company provides legal housing, engineering, and shared tooling.
• Language assets created under the lab fall under the Declaration from the first day.
• The lab’s public home can launch before a foundation is registered. The commitments are already public.

A foundation, in this model, is not a second company invented for paperwork. It is the community governance and asset-protection arm of a language lab — the part that faces the community and protects what belongs to them.

When resources allow, that arm should be registered as an independent nonprofit governed by the language community. Until then, the public commitments are already binding.

• Stage 1 — Founder custodianship. The lab exists, the Declaration applies, and language assets are held in trust.
• Stage 2 — Community participation. People who speak the language contribute work, funding, or governance attention. Participation in the community is not the same as holding governance office.
• Stage 3 — Community foundation. A nonprofit is registered for that language. The board comes from that community. Language assets transfer at no cost. Wekify may remain a technology partner. It does not govern the foundation.

The company can build. The community owns the language.

• Wekify can provide platforms, hosting, design systems, and reused engineering.
• Wekify does not own the language data, the community voice, or the right to speak for that people.
• Wekify will not hold governance authority over a community foundation created for a language.
• A lab may raise its own revenue — cultural commerce, community gifts, or other independent means — so the work is not owned by a grant condition.

This model is meant to be copied. The second lab should not have to invent a new relationship with Wekify.

Labs do not merge into one another. Shared tools are shared. Identity is not.
